Hawaii has high light and humidity (about 50-70%RH) so to prevent shock when you get your plant it's best to first plant in a movable pot and place in the shade with daily misting.  Do this for at least a week, or more if you live in a hot and dry place.  You may notice that the old leaves die off as new ones develop, this is the plant producing new organs that can handle the new environment.  Once this acclimatization has occurred you may plant out your specimen without fear.
